Unlike most days at Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and grey, damp as a swamp and as dismal as could be imagined. All of the recent arrivals had no idea what to think, as they had never experienced a day like this before. But the animals who had been waiting for their beloved people knew exactly what was going on and started to gather at the pathway leading to The Bridge to watch. It wasn't long before an elderly animal came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. The other animals, the ones who had been there for awhile, knew what his story was right away, for they had seen this happen far too often. He approached slowly, obviously in great emotional pain, but with no sign of injury or illness. Unlike all of the other animals waiting at The Bridge, this animal had not been restored to youth and made healthy and vigorous again. As he walked toward The Bridge, he watched all of the other animals watching him. He knew he was out of place here and the sooner he could cross over, the happier he would be. But, alas, as he approached The Bridge, his way was barred by the appearance of an Angel who apologized, but told him that he would not be able to pass. Only those animals who were with their people could pass over Rainbow Bridge. With no place else to turn to, the elderly animal turned towards the fields before The Bridge and saw a group of other animals like himself, also elderly and infirm. They weren't playing, but rather simply lying on the green grass, forlornly staring out at the pathway leading to The Bridge. And so, he took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting. One of the newest arrivals at The Bridge didn't understand what he had just witnessed and asked one of the animals that had been there for a while to explain it to him. "You see, that poor animal was a rescue. He was turned in to rescue just as you see him now, an older animal with his fur greying and his eyes clouding. He never made it out of rescue and passed on with only the love of his rescuer to comfort him as he left his earthly existence. Because he had no family to give his love to, he has no one to escort him across The Bridge." The first animal thought about this for a minute and then asked, "So what will happen now?" As he was about to receive his answer, the clouds suddenly parted and the gloom lifted. "Watch, and see.", said the second animal. Approaching The Bridge could be seen a single person and among the older animals, the whole group was suddenly bathed in a golden light and they were all young and healthy again, just as they were in the prime of life. A second group of animals from those waiting, came to the pathway and bowed low as the person neared. At each bowed head, the person offered a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ears. The newly restored animals fell into line and followed him towards The Bridge. They all crossed The Bridge together. "What happened?" "That was a rescuer. The animals you saw bowing in respect were those who found new homes because of her work. They will cross when their new families arrive. Those you saw restored were those who never found homes. When a rescuer arrives, they are allowed to perform one, final act of rescue. They are allowed to escort those poor animals that they couldn't place on earth across The Rainbow Bridge." "I think I like rescuers", said the first animal. "So does GOD", was the reply. Together, they all walked over the bridge and disappeared. The young pup was still in awe. "Was that an angel?" he whispered. "No, son," the older dog replied. "That was more than an angel. That was a rescuer."

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals.
Especially for animals who are suffering;
For any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
For all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them
We ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals
And so to share the blessings of the merciful.

So small and alone in an inhospitable world
Struggling through each day just to stay alive
As people rush by if they notice them at all
Remark and wonder that they manage to survive

We rush through our lives, no one has the time
To find a moment to reach out to them or care
Know that even though they seem to be alone
That there is one who for them is always there

So many eyes that see but don’t see them
Hearts that don’t take notice of their plight
In a world that seems to not notice them at all
There is always one who keeps them in his sight

As we rush through our lives passing them by
Too busy to find time for them in our busy lives
They are not alone, they are watched with love
There is one who keeps them always in his eyes

They suffer through short lives of want and fear
Then are seemingly unremarked when they’ve past
But know for them there are silver tears that fall
A tender heart waiting as he brings them home at last

When first you decided to rescue one who needed all your love.
Somehow that sweet face and loving spirit touched your heart.
You didn't know it would be such a blessing from above.
But once the love began to grow you knew you would never part

You took that one home with you and gave all the love you could.
And all that love was rewarded in return with devotion beyond belief.
Surprised to learn you could love more then you ever thought you would.
And not knowing one day it all would turn to grief.

But all to soon the years flew by and the time came to say goodbye.
Your heart was broken as tears flowed down your face.
You cried more tears then one person should ever have to cry.
But for all the love you gave there is a healing grace.

For one day you will be again with them never more to part.
And there will only be tears of joy when once again you meet.
Joy and laughter will once again fill your lonely heart.
When you reach Rainbow bridge and they come to greet.

So be happy while they are with you and know you did what your heart was led to do.
And never turn away one who needs you so very much.
For each soul you rescue that needs your love will one day again be with you.
Ane you will be rewarded many times for sharing your loving touch.

So many came to see me and hold me, but I was waiting for you to come
I was waiting for that knowing in my heart this one is mine
I had a distant memory of love from long ago, another life, another time
Memories of hugs and warmth, arms that held me close, but let me go
Now here I am in this cage waiting and watching so alone, so lost
Was it a dream or did that love ever happen, was it truly mine?
Memories are all I have

This morning, I felt in my heart this is the day love comes back to me
I just knew it, so I washed my face and looked my best and watched for you
I heard the voice of the one who has tried to give me comfort
"This one is a gentle soul all she wants is to belong and be loved"
I looked up into your eyes of understanding and I found home and heart
My heart whispered you are home and I am whole and loved
The knowing was there, arms reached out to hold me, hearts touched
Bonded in a heart beat, lasting love always and forever
No longer alone in this dark world but surrounded by light
No longer watching and waiting, my heart sings I am home

Your's is the heart that cares and reached out to a lost one
love to a wounded soul warmth to a cold heart
Life is good and so wonderful
I was waiting for you and you stopped to care
